Traditional water softeners rely on salt for operation, with an average household of 3–4 people consuming approximately 40–60 pounds of salt each month. During the regeneration cycle, these systems discharge sodium and chloride ions into wastewater, which can infiltrate groundwater supplies, degrade soil quality, and harm aquatic ecosystems.
